so instead of using self i decided to switch to variable on the time to spawn all setting under wave settings. i used a float of 30 assuming that would mean 30 seconds but when i run the game it just sits at 0 and everything spawns at once. am i overlooking something?

"Sits at zero" means your World Variable got reset to zero when the Scene started, right? Your "starting value" of that World Variable is probably zero. You can see and change that in the World Variable Inspector. However I noticed that the Inspector is broken (just fixed it). It always shows 0 for float types. But if you set the starting value on the game object above that (called "WorldVariables", where it shows all the World Variables), it works for me.

In that case I cannot reproduce the problem. I tried setting my start value to 30 and a wave of 5 spawned 1 every 6 seconds. As expected. If you would like to send me a small project that reproduces it, I'll take a look.
Is that a Triggered Spawner or Syncro Spawner? If Triggered, what event is starting the wave?

I did the test on Syncro too...I suggest you update to the latest and see if that fixes it.
